The 145th First Turn
The 145th First Turn
Fine art reproduction print of an original 18x24 inch oil painting on canvas.
On February 15, 2020, I live painted this Kentucky Derby scene at the Steven Vanover Foundation Gala in Louisville, Kentucky in front of more than 400 guests to help raise money to fight cancer. The original oil painting was live auctioned and went for $4,000! I finished the painting as my no. 29 during my 29 Paintings in 29 Days challenge during the month of February.
This painting holds a special place in my heart because of the cause it helped support and the nostalgic tradition it represents to me. I grew up celebrating Derby Day with my family at my grandparent’s riverside home in Frankfort, Kentucky. In the morning we’d enjoy the festivities of the Derby Breakfast Celebration downtown, and afterwards, we’d relax, cook out and play games while watching the races. Since then, I’ve had the opportunity to experience the races first hand and have always wanted to paint a scene just like this!
